Scottish District Cup Final Review

What an afternoon of hockey. The Hillhead family descended on the Glasgow Green National Hockey Centre in huge numbers to support the Men’s 2s in their first ever Scottish District Cup Final.

Even throughout the warm up, the Hillhead faithful made themselves heard and the atmosphere was unmatched throughout the rest of the days matches. It was amazing to see Hillhead’s next generation of athletes join the Men’s 2s in the walkout and in the huddle before the game.

Hillhead got off to a flyer, scoring within two minutes. Chris Moon drove across the midfield before firing a pass through multiple lines of Western Wildcats defenders to Ewan Campbell who controlled the ball and fired a reverse stick shot into the roof of the net past the oncoming Western keeper.

Just a few minutes later it was 2-0, Hillhead won a penalty corner and ran a slick option with Ewan Campbell once again finding the net, albeit with a bit less conviction than his first.

Western Wildcats spurned a clear opportunity in the early stages of Q3, firing a reverse shot wide of the goal. Alan Meikle took the dead ball early, scooping the ball to Ewan Campbell in the opposition half. Ewan found his brother Graeme on the edge of the circle who then buried a reverse stick shot of his own into the bottom corner just six seconds after Western missed their chance. Clinical.

Matt Wilson made it 4-0 after a penalty corner reaward. Michael Sherry was the man in control at the top of the circle and he slid a low drag to back post to the waiting Wilson for a sharp deflection.

From here, it was all about crowd entertainment and making it a close game, Hillhead picked up a couple of cheap yellows and a red. Meaning that the latter stages of the game was played out with 10 players or less on the pitch. Hillhead did concede two goals in this period which may have got a few in the crowd shifting nervous in their seats. However, the Hillhead boys got control of the ball with a few minutes left and saw out the game in a professional manner.

Congratulations to the 2s on a fantastic unbeaten season in league and cup. Thanks to everyone for turning out. It was an amazing day, with support that was unmatched across the weekend.
