Weekend Preview 23rd - 24th September

Hillhead Men’s Hockey – National Leagues Week One Preview

Dundee Wanderers v Hillhead 1s – Men’s Premiership, Dalnacraig 1200hrs

After what has seemed like a long build-up, Hillhead’s first XI squad are fully charged and ready to go as they travel east to face newly promoted Dundee Wanderers before facing Uddingston at home on Sunday. Coach Yan Adams has enjoyed the most competitive training pool the club has ever seen, demonstrating the strength in depth which the club has built up over the course of the last decade. As promising and encouraging as this depth is, it has nonetheless made Adams’ selections particularly challenging. He has, however, used a number of pre-season friendlies and a trip to Newcastle to settle on a 16 for the opening double header weekend. The squad remains largely settled from last year, with Jed Lennox, Ewan Campbell and Murray Ross who featured prominently for last season’s undefeated second XI rewarded for a promising pre-season. The ones are also delighted to have Fraser Ward back after a long injury lay-off. Saturday’s opponents Dundee Wanderers are always a fierce opponent, particularly in Dundee. Their opening match against Grange appeared to be a close affair, which will surely signal to Hillhead how stern a test of their credentials this match will be. A win for the Glasgow men would be a huge fillip for the squad as they prepare to face local rivals Uddingston at Windyedge on the Sunday. Two wins over the weekend would surely signal Hillhead’s intent for a top six finish, with anything less than four points arguably a disappointing return on their ambitions and potential. Good luck gents.

Hillhead 2s v Watsonians 3s – Regional League One, Lower Windyedge 1300hrs

Last season’s league and cup winners have had a disappointing pre-season and go into their opening fixture with an unsettled squad. Whilst the squad have not had time to gel, they are full of quality and in time will no doubt form a formidable team under the captaincy of Ben Graham and the coaching of newly appointed coach Euan Menzies. Hillhead will need to handle the pressure of being the team to topple this season, something they are unaccustomed to. First up for the Champions are newly promoted Watsonians threes. On paper an outside observer may predict a comfortable home win, however, this Watson’s side will be no pushover, with very few weaknesses from back to front. Hillhead will undoubtedly have more start quality, but will this be enough to break the cohesive and settled Edinburgh side down?
